CT Scanning in Archaeology

چکیده

In this chapter we will review the use of x-ray computed tomography (CT) scanning in the field of archaeology. The story will be told in roughly chronological order, starting with the first reported use of a CT scanner in the field of archaeology and then look at some some possibilities for the future. Since the introduction of the x-ray CT scanner in the 1970’s the quality of the images has steadily improved enabling the role of the CT scanner to expand into the field of archaeology. In the context of this chapter, archaeology will be deemed to include the study of ancient human remains and artefacts but exclude remains from prehistory, which normally comes under the heading of palaeontology. (It would perhaps be appropriate to note that CT scanners have been successfully applied in the study of fossils). CT scans have mostly been used to study mummies but have also been used to examine other archaeological artefacts such as clay tablets, scrolls, pottery, bronze statues and swords.

3-D CAT-scan: Anthropology, Archaeology and Virtual Reality

The use of CAT-scanning and three-dimensional image rendering is a powerful tool in the documentation, analyses and exhibition of human remains. Human remains may be CAT-scanned to ensure a complete documentation of the specimens. Furthermore, such documentation is easily stored and shared on computers, allowing researchers access to othenvise nonaccessible materials. CAT-scanning is also an im...

Designing CT scanning rooms and estimating patient and personnel absorbed dose using code (MCNPX 2.6)

One of the most widely used diagnostic devices in medical imaging is computed tomography scanning with the use of X-ray ionization. After years of using this tool in the diagnosis and treatment, external doses of these beams can pose a risk of secondary cancer, which is significant in terms of radiation safety and protection. In this paper, using the Monte Carlo code MCNPX2.6 performed over thr...

3d-reconstruction & Re-production in Archaeology

First an imaging 3D-Laser Scanner (3D-LS) will be presented and its functioning will be explained. The scanning mechanism of the 3D-LS is realized by two Galvanometer Scanners. Using such a scanning device it is possible to program various scanning patterns depending on the application. Therefore, the scanner can be applied for the digitization of small sculptures as well as for digitizing inte...
